Nationwide I Am Team GB sports day joined by Olympic heroes
After the record breaking Olympics that the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team saw in Rio, everyone can get involved with a nationwide sports day named I Am Team GB on Saturday 27 August. Anyone who was inspired by the sports they saw can join in at various places across the country – and some of the Olympic heroes are joining in too!
The festival is free to attend, and being named as the biggest ever sports day in the country, and hopes to capitalise on the Rio 2016 excitement of Team GB winning 67 medals and coming second in the medal table for the first time ever as well as the upcoming Paralympics in Rio, and get all people, young and old, who want to try out a sport they saw.
There are loads of events happening near our outdoor activity centre in Cornwall on 27 August too, from volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, rowing and water polo.
The Olympic heroes who won medals in Rio are also taking part. Swimmer Jazz Carlin will join in the celebration of sporting wins at Cardiff, gymnast Max Whitlock will join members of the public in London and cyclist Elinor Barker will be getting people on their bikes at Coronation Street in Manchester.
It’s not just the athletes who are encouraging people to get out and experience some fantastic sports, as ITV are switching off all their channels for one hour on Saturday morning to get people off the couch and outdoors.
It is easy to join in with the events by going online and joining up. Hopefully the spirit of the Olympics will continue into the school’s new year and get the kids outside and trying all sorts of sports. At Outdoor Adventure we have lots of sports and outdoor activities that kids love trying out on school residential trips, some of which are included in the Olympics, and some which will hopefully be in the future!
