What are your safety standards?
We are an approved BSA surf school with a 27 year proven track record of the highest standards of safety. All of our staff are fully qualified and highly experienced at coaching surfing. They are also RLSS Beach Lifeguards.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
No, all you need is to be able to swim 50m. If you are a novice you don't need to go into water deeper than your waist.
Are boards and wetsuits provided?
Yes, we will supply you with a board and full length wetsuit - we have both summer and winter wetsuits (also boots, and gloves if it's chilly). This is all included in your lesson.
Can I use my own equipment?
Yes, you are welcome to use your own wetsuit and if you are an intermediate your own board as well as long as you are competent enough not to jeopardize anyone else's safety.
What do I need to bring with me?
Just a towel, swimming costume/shorts to wear under your wetsuit, sunscreen and any medication you need. If you are with us all day, don't forget a packed lunch (there is also a cafe at the beach) - a sense of humour definitely helps too!
What time do sessions start?
Morning sessions start at 9:30, afternoon sessions at 1:30. Please arrive 10 minutes early to fill out the booking form.
Where do I meet?
At our Surf Centre at Widemouth Bay – Click for directions and map
What facilities are there at the Centre?
Changing rooms, toilets, showers, free tea and coffee and a cold drinks machine. If you are staying all day you're welcome to eat your lunch on our cliff-top seating overlooking the surf.
Are there any age limits?
We normally say the youngest we take is 8 years old, as they need to be big enough to use their board. There is no upper age limit!
What if there is no surf?
If the waves aren't big enough to run a BSA session you still have some choices. You can transfer your booking to another day, take part in a surf training session at the beach that includes learning some board skills (paddling techniques etc) fitness and balance training, some games and competitions and surfing theory or we can refund your money. You may want to have a go at another activity - Outdoor Adventure has a huge range.
How many people are in a group?
To ensure we can provide you with quality coaching, the group sizes are kept small. We work with the BSA recommendations of 1:8 or 1:10 depending on the conditions for beginners and 1:6 for improvers if surfing unbroken waves.
Do we still surf if it is raining?
Definitely, you're going to get wet anyway - what better to do on a rainy day than go surfing! If however the coaches feel the conditions are unsafe, due to the weather or sea state they will cancel the lesson.
