Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
No, all you need is to be able to swim 50m. If you are a novice you don’t need to go into water deeper than your waist.

Are boards and wetsuits provided?
Yes, we will supply you with a board and full length wetsuit (also boots and gloves if it’s chilly) free of charge as part of your session.

Can I use my own board?
Yes, but you will need to be competent enough not to jeopardize anyone else’s safety.

What do I need to bring with me?
Just a towel, a swimming costume/shorts to wear under your wetsuit, some sunscreen and don’t forget your shower gel for when you get out. A sense of humour definitely helps too!

What time do sessions start?
Morning sessions start at 9:30, afternoon sessions at 1:30, although please arrive 5 minutes early to fill out a booking form.

Are there any age limits?
Not really, we normally say the youngest we take is 8 years old to make sure they are big enough to carry the boards. There is no upper age limit.

What if there is no surf?
There are a number of options if we decide not to run a BSA session due to a lack of surf. Your booking could be transferred to another day. We may be able to offer you another activity with Outdoor Adventure. We could offer you a surf training session to include theory, fitness and balance training and paddling techniques. Or, we could refund any money and recommend a good pub.

What if the surf is massive?
It is very rare that the surf gets too big to run sessions. If the beaches were closed then we could offer another activity with Outdoor Adventure.

I can surf a little already; can I come on the same session as my friend who is a complete novice?
Yes, you may be in different coaching groups on the beach but will surf in the same area at the same time.

What are the coach to client ratios?
1:8 or 1:10 depending on the conditions for beginners, or 1:6 for improvers if surfing unbroken waves.

Do we still surf if it is raining?
As you’re getting wet anyway we still surf in the rain. We can’t think of anything better to do on a rainy day than go surfing. In fact we can’t think of anything better than going surfing whatever the weather!
