What makes our family holidays work so well?

Outdoor Adventure began running family holidays 5 years ago. Many of our previous customers now have families and want to bring them down as well! Before we launched these holidays we asked lots of people, lots of questions – this is what we came up with:

Our holidays had to:

  • Have flexible programmes allowing parents and kids to choose the same or different activities
  • Allow parents to relax and not have to organise things all day
  • Be full of exciting and engaging activities
  • Create an environment where all the family can enjoy each others company
  • Be perceived as a cool place to go
  • Have plenty to do in the evenings so no-one gets bored
  • Fit in with school holidays
  • Be priced competitively and offer value for money
  • Have a range of bedroom options
  • Allow either mum or dad to stay full board without taking part or paying for activities – they could then look after the smaller children or babies. Parents could then take turns to take part in activities?
  • Provide different meal times and menus for children and adults if required
  • Have patient, fun staff!

5 years on - and our Family Activity Holidays are still getting better!

The flexible programme! This has proved the most important thing regarding the success of our family holiday – we are genuinely flexible. Families don’t have to decide and commit to an activity in four days time. We let you look at the forecast, see how you feel and decide the night before. We can even change it the next day. Parents and kids can enjoy the activity together or do their own thing – maybe with the new friends they have just made. We also include a range of optional evening activities and entertainments.

Our Team

Our team look forward to the family weeks as they are something quite different to run. The staff are great to be with – they are fun, keep things relaxed and know how to build up a great rapport with the kids. Yes, they are qualified and experienced, but what makes it work is that they genuinely care that you have a fun and memorable holiday with us and they will go all the way to make it happen. They have the experience to adapt their sessions and coaching to the different ages, abilities and dynamics within the group so everyone learns and has fun. All our staff team are carefully chosen and have been fully vetted and police-checked before employment.

What if the weather is bad or there's no surf?

Yes, we can get bad weather and yes, sometimes the sea is flat, however, we believe that the strength of a hoilday like this is that it takes the pressure off relying on good weather. If you are getting wet anyway who cares? If it’s too wet to climb on the cliffs we go to a climbing wall inside a 40 foot grain silo five minutes away or swap climbing to another day and go coasteering. If the surf is flat (highly un-likely) we’ll go sea kayaking! You will always enjoy great activities and the company of our instructors, who always make the day wicked and full of laughs.

Location

Outdoor Adventure is situated on the unspoilt, rugged north Cornwall coast. It is easy to get to and only 1hour from the M5 junction at Exeter. The Centre’s setting is incredible. On arrival you will immediately find yourself surrounded by a magnificent, naturally wild, coastal environment. Our cliff-top centre overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and the 10 acres of beautiful Centre grounds have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest by English Nature and European area of conservation. Look out across the Atlantic Ocean and feel alive! The centre has the best of both worlds – although it is in a remote and spectacular location Bude is only 4 miles away and there are many attractions in the local area. There is a great choice of clean lifeguard-patrolled Blue Flag beaches and the North Cornwall coast path runs behind the Centre. A pub is within a short walking distance and the Eden Project just 40 minutes away.

Our commitment to the environment

Outdoor Adventure is environmentally aware and pro-active. We are a provider of the John Muir Environmental Award and are on our way to becoming an Eco Centre. We work closely with English Nature, The National Trust, The Heritage Coast, The Forestry Commission and The Marine Conservation Society.
Our team pass on our knowledge of the environment to our customers and the John Muir philosophy of wild places - Discover Explore, Conserve and Share. We regularly monitor all of our activity locations to ensure our usage is not having any negative environmental impact. By taking this approach we can enjoy these amazing places with our guests without spoiling them for others. For the benefit of everyone, it is important that everything we do as a company is sustainable.

Choose your programme from the following activities

Surfing

A must if you are in Cornwall !

Whether it’s getting the buzz from your first wave or the challenge of learning to bottom turn on a green wave your surfing moments will stay with you forever.

Coasteering

Coasteering takes you into a very alien environment. You are actually at the point at which the sea meets the cliffs - so one minute you can be traversing across barnacle covered ledges and the next find yourself having to dive in to the sea and cross water-filled zawns to continue your journey!

Windsurfing

Harness the power of the wind.

Enjoy the sensation of speed, blasting across open water - then master tacks and gybes to get back! We’re lucky and get more than our fair share of good wind in Cornwall .

Kayaking

An incredibly versatile sport. It has everything from tranquil paddling up calm rivers to the adrenaline rushes from white water rapids, battling against the surf or taking on a solo ocean crossing.

Canadian Canoeing

A great way to journey. This is the method of transport that the Indians used. Our canoes can carry from 2 to 4 people in a boat and provide a perfect activity for a group to enjoy.

Climbing

Experience real exhilaration and the satisfaction of conquering a rock face with the sea crashing beneath you. Start off on an easy route to gain confidence and then take on a tricky one and get the rush of being exposed on a rock face.

Abseiling

You can’t beat the thrill of abseiling down a Cornish cliff face. As you descend you can marvel at the spectacular views all around. A great confidence boost.

Coastal discovery/walking

We are spoilt for choice for fabulous walks - anything from an easy stroll to walking on challenging terrain crossing breathtaking valleys with steep climbs. Fantastic for wildlife.

Coastal traversing

An unusual activity where you make your way along the base of the sea cliffs over or under whatever comes your way. Pick your route and try to stay dry!

Orienteering

A fun and diverse sport for everyone. Potter - walk - run - compete. Learn and then put your navigation skills to the test in our huge forest stretching down to the sea.
